Ultra Genesis Part 33: Hau you fightOlivia’s mouth finally cracked into a smile as Kaili called Tiny back into its pokeball. She nodded several times before finally speaking. “Diamonds only sparkle after coal is pushed to its absolute limit. You took what I threw at you without breaking a sweat.” Her hips continued to sway almost tortuously as she approached. “I am slightly worried that you would have been willing to let your pokemon go to far at the end there. Had I not recalled Lycanroc, you may have done something we’d both regret.”Her tone wasn’t angry, instead a well practised rebuking that he’d heard before. People who could get to this tone, seemed to believe they were the only ones to ever pull it off. The young man suspected it worked better on those who hadn’t heard it a dozen times already.“Here” the native woman held out her hand, a brown crystal, the same shape and size as his other ‘Z Crystals’ jutting out from between her pointer and middle fingers, her thumb to its side. Kaili gently took the gemstone, somehow on edge as he reached for it despite knowing what it was. “Rockium Z. Mallow told me that you weren’t interested in Z dances, so I won’t subject you to it.” Her smile was warm, but there was a strange glitter in her eye, as if she was daring him to ask. “Your next stop is Hokulani Observatory on Ula’Ula island. Good luck”Unwilling to respond, the young man simply nodded, stowing the stone with the others. It was cruel, he thought, that to get that kind of power, you have to willingly embarrass yourself. How many fights could be beaten near instantly by the employment of one of these ‘Z-moves’. How quickly would he be able to amass funds, train his pokemon. But then the worst thought of them all hit him. This was the second grand trial, and the first time he’d encountered the move. What if the point was you to get use to experiencing them before getting to this point. Was he about to encounter more and more Z-moves as his trials continued? Sink or swim, head held high or absolute mockery. What would he choose? He had an out though, a way to not decide just yet without seeming himself indecisive. Ivy was trotting excitedly over to him. “Wow!” She was clearly trying to figure out which pokeball Tiny was hiding in as her eyes raced along his body. “That was so cool Kai! You knew exactly which pokemon to use when! And I didn’t know you had a Larvitar!” She had taken his arm and was pulling him toward the side of the area while continuing to talk a mile a minute. “Daddy likes to call Clay his Tyranitar! And that Mimikyu! I’ve never met a Mimikyu, but it looked like a pokemon Tess would love!”They had stopped by the path back to Konikoni city, Kaili leaning against a low wall as he looked back toward the centre of the arena. He was still surprised she was even talking to him, but he wasn’t going to bring up why, in case she was intentionally avoiding the topic. “Kaili? What’s up?” Ivy turned, looking in the direction he had. The woman, Olivia, was at the far end of the arena with her back to the groups. “Nothing. Hau stayed to watch my trial, figured it’d be rude not to watch his too.” He shrugged, settling back in the shade against the sunset, leaning and watching. Ivy glanced from him to Hau and back before skipping to stand next to the young man, leaning against the wall as she eagerly waited with him.The normally excited boy looked over, the colour draining from his face a little as he flicked the two a faint smile and nervous wave. He’d been so happy to watch Kaili’s fight, was Hau having a little stage fright? It wouldn’t surprise him.“YOU CAN DO IT HAU!” Ivy seemed to almost scream in his ear, enthusiastically waving at the other boy who gave a stilted wave and nervous smile in response. Kaili’s right hand rose enough to mimic the general gesture of a wave, though he didn’t actually wave.“Just a moment dear.” Olivia nodded warmly, feeding her pokeballs in turn into a small machine perched on a rock. It beeped three times each time she put a ball in, and three further beeps prompted her to remove them again. With an almost sadistic single chuckle, Kaili tapped all his pokeballs, allowing his team to linger around him and Ivy as Olivia began walking back into the arena, her eyes on Hau. The young man could feel Kladenet’s banner wrapped around his arm, while a single one of Mr. Balloon’s tendrils grabbed his upper left arm. Looking over, he could see the other tendril holding Ivy’s shoulder. She was giggling quietly and patting the drifloons head as Olivia gave her opening speech to Hau.With a deep breath, Hau grabbed one of his pokeballs. He took up a weird stance, it almost looked to Kaili like he was intending to pitch a baseball. Olivia’s hip swaying dance, whatever you want to call it, resulted in another flash of red light and again the strange bug pokemon took to the field. Winding back, Hau launched his ball forward with an emphatic grunt.A blue, scaly fish-like pokemon reminiscent of a dog in many ways, appeared in the middle of the field. Its finned tail slapped the pokeball back toward the boy, who caught it and returned it to his hip.“Hey, Uhp!” Hau cheered, hopping to the left excitedly. Olivia had begun to tap her foot, though the poor pokemon likely didn’t get a chance to feel the command before a massive torrential gout of water seemed to explode from the mouth of Hau’s pokemon. For a second Kaili thought maybe the poor thing had drowned, before noticing it several meters away, unconcious slightly up the rock wall behind Olivia. He couldn’t hear what Olivia said to her young challenger as she returned her pokemon, Ivy’s cheer beside him was far too loud. Another flash of light from the Kahuna’s side and the strange plant pokemon had reappeared. “Uhp, Uhp!” Hau clapped once excitedly as he stepped backward. The Vaporeon between him and his opponent slid backward slightly, unleashing another gout of water just as some strange tendrils struck it in the side of the head.Of the two, the vaporeon seemed the worst for wear already. Grabbing two pokeballs, Hau lobbed one high in the air before throwing the second more directly. The direct throw tapped the vaporeon on the back, bringing it back in a flash of red light. Just as the light vanished, the lobbed ball came down, striking on top of it and unleashing a flash of light of its own.The boy seemed to have forgotten everyone watching, too absorbed in the fight with an excited bounce to his step as he caught each of the balls batted back to him by the wings of the feathery green pokemon that now took centre stage.“Yeah go!” The boy took a step forward for the first time, Olivia holding her ground as the bird rushed her strange plant. The plant struck back, hitting the Dartrix with several tendrils as it pecked hard at the top of its head. “Go, go!”It was a flurry of motion, Kaili could see the worry starting to paint Ivy and Lillie’s faces. Ivy was screaming excitedly for the bird to win, Lillie seemed to simply be paralysed by fear. But as the young man looked at the fight, a strange sensation swept from his brow and through to the back of his head. He could see echoes of the Dartrix, shadows of itself. And shadows of Olivia’s plant. Every echo, every shadow, ended the same way. Three pecks and the plant crumpled to the ground as the bird fluttered to landing in front of Hau again. The boy had a bounce to his step, hopping side to side, forward and back in a flurry, a crowd of shadows and echoes. A migraine started to build in Kaili’s head but he refused to look away. He knew if it did, Hau would take that moment to look over. Doing his best to push the shadows away, the young man focused on Hau himself, and the Dartrix. The bird pecked hard several times at the plant, fluttering around above it to avoid attacks as best it could. All it took was three, three hard pecks to the top of this strange plants head and it crumpled to the ground. Hau’s arms shot up as he cheered. Why was he so excited to beat the plant? The Lycanroc had the Z move, and here it came.As the canine pokemon appeared in the middle of the arena in a flash of red light, Hau stopped his little bouncing dance. The boy took a weird stance, both legs together and arms crossed in an X in front of his face. The air around him seemed to strangely echo, thickening without adding any more air or smoke, it just seemed, thicker. He swung his arms in arches on either side of him before bringing them to cross wrists in front of him. It didn’t look that strange, especially with the concentration on Hau’s face. Not that he could see it all that clearly, the air around the boy seemed dark and heavy. And it seemed to spread to the Dartrix. He brought his hands together as he crouched as if praying. The shaking of his body could have looked to most like he was attempting to sway like a plant, but there were strange rips in the air around him, echoes of small holes that shoved him from side to side as the boy stood and finally opened his hands. “UHP”What followed almost knocked Kaili backward over the wall behind him. It was almost as if there was a massive explosion from the Dartrix. Grass and weeds flooded the ground of the arena and shot out under the spectators feet. But only Kaili and the Lycanroc seemed to be struck by any kind of tangible force. “Well done, a part of me expected you to attempt to defeat me with only the vaporeon.” Olivia nodded, strolling up to the boy in front of her through the flower patch that had replaced the open dirt arena. “I’m sure you and Kaili are destined to get far in the trials. Best of luck young man.” She smiled as she held out the crystal for Hau too too take. Once he took the stone, she stepped back. The start of the dance was similar to what Hau had done, but instead of crouching with her hands together, she flexed both arms upward to her sides before striking a hilarious anime pose; one foot bent forward and the other extended as far back as she could, one hand flexing up in front of her and the other flexing down behind.“Make sure to remember the hip movement. The hips are always crucial to Z dances.” She nodded, stepping back a little more as Lillie and Ivy rushed up to congratulate him as well. Kaili busied himself returning each of his pokemon before it came to be his turn.
Ultra Genesis Part 32: A Tiny problemThe tall man looked down at Kaili once the youth’s footsteps had disappeared into the creaking of the hedge maze.“Indeed. You are a trial-goer, aren’t you?” The man’s eyes swept across him, as if searching him for something. “Must say I’m surprised you didn’t simply fight them with your pokemon. Not much of a Trainer are you? Alas, I said I’d reward you. Tomorrow, when you have finished your grand trial, come to Hano Grand Resort and I will take you to see a wondrous place.”Kaili fought the instinct, the desire, the need to tell the guy he wasn’t going to check out his basement or go anywhere with him. But he could simply not go to the resort. The man would have no reason to actively look for him. So the young man just nodded, not making eye contact with the creep. With an unsettling smile, the tall man pulled packaged gloves from his pocket. Removing the plastic, he gently worked them onto his hands before stashing the plastic in his pocket and turning to the slowpoke.“Come here little one” The man pulled his coat aside so as to kneel without pushing it into the dirt. The Slowpoke simply looked at him puzzled for a few seconds. For a moment it looked like the slowpoke was frowning at the man before its expression softened and its head tilted slightly. The man stepped forward a little more, scooping the pokemon up under its front legs and lifting it in a strange way. It looked almost like the man was putting on a show of holding the slowpoke close despite wanting to peg it hard back at the ground and wipe its drool off his coat.“Thank you again young man.” The man nodded to Kaili before walking away into the maze.Trying to push the situation from his mind, Kaili turned back toward the Ruins of Life. A small path wound amid some totems to a field in front of a cave up ahead. As Kaili reached the first of the totems, a voice sounded in his mind.“So-” The woman’s voice felt like it came from behind him.Turning, Kaili watched as a woman hopped down from the rock wall to his right. She wore a strange black singlet top with a pattern cut out of the bottom and pants that were both baggy and form fitting at the same time. Her pink hair was braided into four tails, but her pissed off expression was the most striking part of her appearance. The girl’s mouth moved slightly as if chewing gum, the tattoo’s up her neck and along the left of her face twitching as she did.“So” She strode up to him with an aggressive swagger. “You’d be the one Gladion was talking about?” Her eyes swept him down and then up again, similar to the tall man but somehow less… intimidating. “Hmph, you don’t look like anything special to me.”The young man didn’t flinch as she approached, not even blinking as she grabbed his singlet. He felt her fist connect with the scales beneath the clothes as she seized him. But if it hurt or surprised her, she didn’t show it.“I’m Plumeria. I help keep Team Skull together. I’m like a big sister to all these numskulls. You have realized what idiots all these guys are, right?” The flicker of pride was only just noticeable beneath her attempts to sound intimidating.“Yeah I’ve noticed” The young man scoffed, reaching up to peel her hand off him. She simply snarled at him before a pain started slightly echoing through his head.It was as if she was covered with shadows of herself, each stepping back several feet before turning in his direction. But she didn’t back away. The feeling of shadows lingering behind her seemed to drill into his brain.A thousand times, the words echoed in his ears. “But don’t you think some dummies are cute in their dumbness-” Amid the cacophany of her voice, he only just heard the words that matched her lips; “I saw what happened.” there was a strange growl in her tone. But she didn’t back away.He had to fight the urge to grab his head, the urge to smash against something in hopes of passing out. He had to fight the voices to hear what she was really saying. Among the “You picking on my cute, dumb brothers and sisters is really annoying me!”’s was the lone sound of her voice softening. “You scared them. But you were scared too weren’t you?”It felt like he’d been stabbed just behind the eyes, watching as the world seemed to turn ever so slightly red before returning to normal. The girl, Plumeria, seemed to almost study his eyes. “What happened when you touched Faba?”There was a golbat behind her, he had to attack, he had to- to force the image from his mind. Had to force it down to at most a strange echoing thought. “Who?” Kaili twitched, doing his best to maintain his composure. Plumeria stepped back, not lining with where the shadows of his thoughts said she should be, but instead pacing back and forth in front of him. “Faba, the tall guy! He was picking on my brother and sister and you stepped in. You grabbed his sleeve and flinched.”He could hear the distant echoes of her voice shouting commands to a golbat. A distant cacophany, only drowned out by the strange red dimming of reality again. “I- Nothing” The young man stretched his back, helping himself stand as tall as possible. But there was a look in Plumeria’s eyes.“Guzma doesn’t see it. He doesn’t want to. He likes the Aether Foundation too much! I need proof.” She suddenly marched up to him again, pulling herself uncomfortably close to his face. “I need you to find proof the Foundation isn’t what they say they are! Before Guzma does something silly and gets everyone hurt.”Reality seemed to dim red for a second again as Plumeria’s voice once again slammed in its thousands into his head. “You’re pretty strong. I’ll give you that. But mess with anyone in Team Skull again, and I’ll show you how serious I can get.” But Plumeria wasn’t talking. She simply turned and strutted up to the hedge maze. Without looking back she slipped between the hedges and left Kaili once again alone.Alone in a sudden crushing silence. Pulling himself together, the young man turned back toward the path through the totems. At closer inspection they almost looked like they could be used as tiki stands. A notion that didn’t surprise him given the fire trial on this island. Continuing up the path slowly revealed a large open field that could be seen from below. Strangely; the only grass in the area was a small spreading in from the path. Everything else was bare earth.A slow beeping sound approached from behind, growing faster the nearer it drew. Kaili stepped into the centre of the clearing and turned to see Lillie and the Professor Burnet strolling up the path he’d just been on. It seemed everyone was in his wake today.“Kaili!” Burnet’s voice echoed in his mind, but the strange beeping didn’t. The woman was holding a small device that looked like an old walkie-talkie, with a small display screen showing a lot of information in green as it beeped excitedly.“Lillie got lost again, so I brought her here. Heard there was a trial on today!” The professor chuckled, Lillie blushing as she did. “Now, I’m sorryto abandon you dear but I have to go. The Masked Royal has a match, and there’s no way that I’m missing it!” There was a sly excitement in her voice. If Kaili couldn’t see her face, he’d swear she was drooling.“That Masked Royal… Who do you think he looks like under that mask, anyway?” She giggled to herself, pointing the device away from Kaili, ignoring as the beeping slowed before she walked away.Kaili silently shook his head, trying his best not to smile at the woman’s goofiness. At least if there was someone in Alola who didn’t recognise that man’s chest it’s a good cover to have his wife act like that. Anything to avoid thinking about the notion that he must wear that mask to bed sometimes…As Burnet disappeared down the small hill, Kaili looked over at Lillie. She wore a pair of strong leather boots that looked a size too big for her and didn’t match the dress. But he suspected that was the point. “I thought you came here yesterday? Did you leave your phone?”“Oh! I heard yours and Hau’s trials are today and I wanted to watch! Mr. Hala’s one is apparently always a big deal and has a crowd. But Ms. Olivia keeps it quieter, you have to know it’s happening to show up!” She was so eager, a far cry from the last few times he’d seen her. For a second he looked around hoping to see Ivy, but he didn’t tell her it was happening today. If she would even come after what happened at the fire trial. He was about to ask if she knew where Olivia was, only for an echo of conversation to ripple up the path toward him. Looking over, he saw the native woman leading two teens about his age to the clearing. His heart skipped a beat suddenly seeing Ivy chatting excitedly to Hau. He expected her to look away when she noticed him, but the cheery girl simply beamed more, waving one of her pompoms excitedly in the air behind Olivia.“Good to see you again then, Kaili.” the older woman nodded, stopping in front of him at the centre of the clearing. Lillie stumbled away, skittering to the side of the clearing as to avoid Hau and Ivy, only for the two cheery teens to approach her anyway. He found Olivia gripping his wrist in a sudden handshake. A quick glance toward his hand and then along the sleeve of his trenchcoat lead to her giving him the slightest smirk.“All right, then! You've completed the trials of all three captains here on Akala Island. Now you face the grand trial of the kahuna—me! Get ready for your hardest Pokémon battle yet on Akala!” She stepped back. “Hau has elected to go second. He said something about you probably not liking sunset specifically.”Stepping away so that the two stood on opposite edges of the clearing, Olivia took a distinct battle stance. It was as if she was waiting for him to make the first move. Resigned to going into battle blind, the young man reached under his coat to tap one of the pokeballs. A flash of light resulted only in a small hole appearing in the ground several steps in front of his feet. He knew she preferred rock pokemon. That was clear from the festival when he arrived. The problem was what ones was he going to fight. With a smirk and a slight nod, Olivia picked one of her pokeballs from her belt. Tossing it in the air, she tapped it with her hip. The ball reattached to her belt as a flash of red light released her pokemon. The pokemon was a strange grey and black beetle thing with a row of, he could only call them feathers, emerging from each side of its body. Something was off. He could see the pokemon, and something about it seemed almost overlayed on itself. Looking at Olivia, the air around her seemed almost to overlap itself. He was finally snapping. He had to be.The creature scuttled forward, using the strange feather-like appendages to push itself despite them clearly not being legs. Kaili’s eyes were suddenly drawn to Olivia’s feet, she was tapping as if anxiously, but the strange pokemon stopped when her heel hit the dirt, and lowered itself slightly into the dirt as she dropped the right side of her foot into the ground.Kaili had no way of instructing his pokemon. He didn’t even know what he’d sent out. This was ‘Sneak’, he’d never even see it, or found out what league battle moves it knew. His best hope was if it dug under Olivia’s pokemon and burst out, perhaps spiking the enemy with a shard of stone. And as soon as he thought it, Kaili saw the ground just to the right of Olivia’s pokemon open and a Larvitar burst out. Sneak had used a Larvitar shell, he didn’t realise it actually was one. The larvitar’s horn was covered with a sharp cropping of rock which easily sliced into the enemy. As soon as it was hit though, the pokemon disappeared in a flash of red light.Olivia’s left eyebrow was raised. “I didn’t even see you send the order.”Kaili shrugged, glancing over at the crowd of three. Hau was whispering to Lillie, pointing at Olivia’s feet. Ivy meanwhile was on her feet with two massive bushy pompoms shaking stupidly just below her breasts. The young man had to force a laugh down with only a smile.Olivia’s next pokeball spun on her finger before she let it roll down her side to her hip. It clasped back to her belt as another pokemon appeared in a flash of light. The pokemon looked almost like a plant. But not any plant he’d ever seen before. It had a green base with four small feet, a thin yellow trunk and a green head that looked almost like a pot or vase, with the worlds ugliest yellowing fern growing out of the top. Sneak did it again, burst from the ground to stab the strange pokemon, almost exactly on cue. But the strike glanced easily off the pokemon’s hide. One of the fern leaves lifted and suddenly unleashed a torrent of water like a firehose. Knowing what he did about Larvitar, and unwilling it to be killed, Kaili’s hand raced to the pokeball at his hip. The water had only managed to clip the side of Sneak’s chest when he vanished in a flash of light. He’d not seen Olivia’s feet move once for that order. Either he was wrong about how she was giving orders, or that was such a common tactic, the pokemon knew what was coming. His hand moved slowly toward Kladenets ball, only for the ground under his feet to seem to shake. It was massive. He felt like the world was being ripped apart, but at the same time a massive rush of air almost knocked him backward. He could feel shadows of himself stumbling back. The young man staggered on the perfectly calm ground, tapping instead another ball.In a flash of red light, Tiny stood between the young man and the strange pokemon. Tiny’s fake pikachu head wobbled happily as it skittered across the ground toward the pokemon.“Just win” Kaili whispered, looking away. He knew what Tiny was like. He waved for Ivy’s attention, drawing her eyes away from the fight for the briefest second. There was a snap and a loud smashing sound followed by a flash of red light.Olivia smiled, sauntering forward two steps, her hips swaying rhythmically. A bead belt came down surprisingly hard on one side, hitting a pokeball and releasing another opponent in a flash of red light.“Now, I know what you’re like, Mr. Kaili. I’ve heard from the trial captains.” She smirked. The pokemon standing in front of her looked almost like a werewolf, only restraining itself from charging Kaili down by focusing its brutal stare on Tiny.A pressure started to build in the young man’s head. The overlapping air around Olivia seemed to build. Growing stronger and stronger as she started to do some silly mock-flexings. He almost wanted to laugh at her. But Hau had grown silent. The crowd were focusing on Olivia and her pokemon. Could they see the air as well? Could they see the strange smoke building around Olivia? Did they wonder why the pokemon seemed to be eagerly breathing in the smoke? All at once, there was a massive sound. The werewolf pokemon throwing back its head in something between a roar and a howl. The arena ground shook, rattling individual dirt grains as massive stones erupted from around them like bamboo shoots. Huge chunks from the mountain around them seemed to be cleaved free, sliding down in a horrifying rain of rock.Had there been any heat, he might think he stood at the brink of a volcanic eruption. The ground shook with each stone erupting or smashing down. Massive gusts of wind threatened to knock him back, were he not so heavy on his own.Glancing over, he could see Ivy leaning against Hau as the young man covered Lillie’s ears with his hands and leaned over her protectively.“Tiny! I want to see it this time.” He shouted over the crashing sounds. Amid the cloud of dirt, he could only just make out the silhouette of a massive dark hand as it seized the wolf around the neck. The black hand was larger than either pokemon, and tossed the wolf around easily. When the smoke cleared, Tiny stood atop the wolf, only prevented from ripping its throat apart by the flash of light from Olivia’s pokeball. Aside from the fake pikachu head being ripped and its stuffing leaking onto the ground, it didn’t look as if Tiny had been hit at all.And finally Kaili understood why some people would put up with the stupid ‘Z dances’. Especially if that’s the result.
Ultra Genesis Part 31: Migraine in the stomachThe four stood there silently for a good few seconds before a question finally occurred to the eldest of the group. Kaili turned to Hau. “What are you even doing here? I thought you’d have done your Grand Trial already.”The two Skull youths looked to Hau at this question before backing away very quietly. The native teen blinked a couple times, apparently processing the change in tone of the situation for a second before grinning. He didn’t back any further away from Kaili, instead making eye contact as he answered. “Oh! Grandpa holds trials regularly because apparently it doesn’t usually take long to do the Verdant Cavern Trial. But there’s so much to do on Akala that Ms. Olivia can’t do that. We have to find her and organise when we wanna do the grand trial!”“Good to know, doesn’t really ans-”“So I’m trying to find her!” “Ah” Kaili looked around, the tail of the trench coat sweeping the rocky ground about his feet as he did. “I don’t think she’s here.” He smirked, Hau laughing as he rubbed the back of his own head slightly. “Yeah well, I figured it was like, a secret trial or something y’know? Like we have to figure out where she hides to be able to organise the proper trial. Like how all the normal trials are doing something like a puzzle before you fight a totem? But way more open ended y’know?”The young man nodded along. It was a reasonable idea to come to. But he didn’t think it was quite right. “How about we go ask around in Konikoni? There’s basically no houses in the town on the other side of the cave so people probably live over here. We’ll just find her home, right?”Hau’s mouth seemed to tauten at the notion for a moment as he considered it. He looked out at the dark sky over the ocean before his shoulders slumped slightly as he nodded. “Konikoni’s just that way. It’s mostly a big intersection. I’ll take the left, you go the right?”The entry to the city was marked by a large japanese style archway. He’d seen similar in pictures of Kanto, so Kaili wasn’t sure what the purpose of the aesthetic was here. It didn’t matter though, the young man had a job to do and wasn’t going to waste his very little brainpower trying to figure out tourism ploys. After passing about four houses, Kaili’s attention was pulled left as a man was trotting toward him, waving and doing a strange ‘quiet’ shout in the night. The man had strangely shifty eyes. He ducked half into an alley between two houses. “psst, hey, don’t come any closer but I need your help.”The young man’s right eyebrow rose at this weirdo’s behaviour. Looking back across the road, he could see Hau reading the mailboxes as he moved from house to house. At least he wasn’t rude enough to knock on the doors at… what even time is it-“Hey, listen, My name’s Looker, International police.” The man pressed himself deeper into the night thickened shadow of the alley. Such that even his silhouette was hard to make out. “I need your help. I believe several people in Konikoni city are secretly, Ditto’s.” He paused for added effect. But all Kaili could hear was a tone dripping with paranoia. “I’ll pay you $2000 for each ditto you can expose!”“Hmm” the young trainer nodded pensively for a few seconds. “I’ll keep my eyes out. Thanks.” He nodded, tapping the side of his nose slyly before advancing past the alley and further down the street. He continued to hear the man shifting around in the alley for several strides past, but at no point did the footsteps seem to emerge to follow him.+============+|| Konikoni Motel ||+--------------------+|| Vacancies ||+============+He wasn’t much for paranoia himself. But people like that should always be watched. He’d encountered enough muggers and psychos on the street to know the best thing to do right now. The young man turned, climbing the two stairs to the door of the small building, letting himself in with the chiming of a bell. He’d considered this place when first planning his trip to Alola, but as he was required to start in Melemele island, it made little sense to book a room on a completely different island. It was by far the cheapest accommodation he’d heard of in Alola, being about the price of a Pokeball per nights stay. But meals weren’t included. He was surprised to see the receptionist still awake behind the counter, actively staring quite blankly at him. The clock behind the man read 2AM, making the person’s wide-eyed alertness all the more bizarre to him. Sure, he was awake, but few other people were this alert at this time. Especially at their job! Without a word from the receptionist, Kaili booked a room for the day, with checkout at 8AM the day after. Score, 6 hours for free.Instead of heading straight to his room, Kaili returned to the front window of the reception room. Peering out into the darkness with his hands cupped around his face, the young man could see the silhouette of a weirdo hiding by the entry arch. As his eyes swept back, he spotted Hau stepping out of a house across the street and slightly further down than himself. A large sign over the front window advertised gemstones and evolutionary rocks. As Hau’s feet hit the curb, the lights in the store behind him clicked off. Looking back left, Kaili noticed the shadow of the man inch closer by a house, keeping to the alleys as much as he could. With a sigh, he opened the door, calling into the night. “Hau!” he waved the boy closer, glancing at the shadow in the alleys occassionally as the other trial-goer approached.“Hey Kaili” The young boy grinned sleepily as he trotted closer, almost tripping over his feet as he did. “I found her! Organised our trials both for sunset tomorrow. I know you’re not big for the heat of the day after all.” He grinned drowzily, not noticing as Kaili moved to only partially occupying the doorway.“Thanks man. I just paid for a room for the day, you can crash on the floor if you want. Save trying to sleep with the bustle in the centre. It gets noisy, trust me.”Hau looked confused at him for a second before nodding slowly. The boy trudged up the few stairs and into the brightly lit reception area. Kaili stared across the road into a shadowy alley. He couldn’t see anyone inside. Yet continued to stare as he slowly closed the door.===========The next day found Kaili wrapped up as if cocooned by the coat and the sheets on the bed. The curtains had been pulled closed and blocked almost every bit of light from filtering in as he’d slept. No-one else lingered in the room waiting for him though. Looking over at the clock, it read 4PM. The young man blinked several times as the first thought through his mind was surprise he’d managed to sleep that long.Rolling out of the bed, the young man gathered his things and trudged downstairs and a little down town toward the pokemon centre. Plenty of people were about, but he didn’t see the strange man from last night anywhere. He ate quickly, skulling his coffee as fast as possible. The gentle din of the pokemon centre was growing into a cacophany in his mind and he had to escape. He needed to leave the city as soon as possible. Perhaps he could train his pokemon a while on the way to the grand trial. So quickly was he out of the city, Kaili thought for a moment that perhaps he’d sprinted. He’d been too focused on the growing headache and raging echoes to properly see the world. Past the cave entrance he’d emerged from last night, Kaili found a strange hedge maze filled with gravestones. A large sign hung over the entrance to the maze.+===========+|| Memorial Hill ||+===========+What surprised him for a moment, was the sight of people battling wild pokemon near to the graves. Zubat, Golbat, Gastly, and a ghost pokemon possessing a stump of wood. It almost looked as if this was how people were trying to show respect to their loved ones who’d passed. Swallowing the uncomfortable feeling about fighting in such a place, Kaili proceeded. It was terrifyingly easy. With the exception of one man’s Umbreon, Mr. Balloon was able to win every battle for Kaili on his own. Buzz had some fun ‘dancing’ with the Umbreon while that fight lasted too. There were barely any echoes of his opponents words as they battled. Enough that he was able to keep his attention where it was needed and earned $68,472.As the young man emerged from the other end of the hedge maze, approaching the Ruins of Life, three people came into sight. Two skull youths; One of the boys from last night, and a girl Kaili had never met. As well as a tall thin man in a white outfit.“Give back that pokemon, hooligans.” The tall man sneered down at the two kids. As Kaili approached, he noticed a sick looking slowpoke behind the youths. It had a strange gold pattern on its head and ears but did not seem at all distressed. The skull teens and the slowpoke were slightly down a hill, as if the man had positioned himself to loom over them as much as possible.“Don’t give me trouble! I’ll reduce you to rubble!” The boy snapped, waving his arms in front of him as he tried to be as intimidating as possible. The girl smirked and nodded along, her arms crossed in front of her.“That’s right! You want it, you’re gonna have to take it!” there was a much better flow to her speech than her friends, but she was still as dweeby as the boy.“Ah! Here is a promising young Trainer!” The tall man looked over at Kaili’s approach. “Fight in my stead, child, and rout these Team Skull ruffians. I will bestow honour upon you, if you do!" he turned back to the skull pair, head back to make it all the more pronounced how much he was looking down his nose at them. Shaking his head behind the man’s back, Kaili stormed closer. His intentionally heavy footfalls dinting the already packed earth. Reaching out, his hand came in contact with the man’s upper arm. He’d intended to pull the man around to look at him. But instead he found himself looking at the aftermath of a battle just down the hill.He was kneeling over an unmoving pokemon’s form, staring up at the man who was looking away with a level of boredom that burned the young man’s blood. They were within the maze of graves, corpses of pokemon littering the ground between them, each with their backs to Kaili, as the man stood there with a condescending eye raise. As more images started to form, the young man wrenched his hand open. The moment he’d let go, he was again at the top of the hill, looking up into the face of condescension. With a sigh, he hung his head before looking down at the two teens down the ramp. A flex of anger at himself rippled across the young man’s shoulders and down his back as he resigned himself to what had to happen. Walking down the hill, he could see the smile around the eyes of the boy.“Look” Kaili whispered when he reached them, a pain moving from his jaw down his neck as he spoke. “You gotta get out of here. Just go.” As he closed his mouth it almost felt like he was about to shatter his teeth. He could hear their reactions before they even responded.“Yo no way dude!” the boy snapped, stepping back. The girl stepped up as if to get in Kaili’s face in her friends stead.“We ain’t leavin’ without the slowpoke Yo. An’ there aint nothin you or bug eyes up there can do to make us!” He wanted to be on her side. Wanted so much to turn and fight the stranger off. But the thought churned his stomach. He couldn’t help but imagine their bodies alongside his pokemon. Not like when he touched the man’s arm. It was just his imagination, but the idea still made him sick.“Listen.” He looked from the girl to the boy. “Thanks for last night, I needed to be talked down before I did something stupid. Something that could get myself hurt.” He stepped back, knowing how this was going to sound and hating himself for it. “So it’s my turn. You are so far out of your league here, I don’t want you getting hurt.”There was a snide scoff from behind him. The teens looked at each other before looking at him and back again.“Ain’t this that K guy?” The girl whispered. But her voice didn’t echo, he could feel shadows moving over them, as if reaching for their pokeballs. The boy nodded. Both looked toward the slowpoke then back. Kaili felt like the world was weirdly fractured. There was a scene playing out in his ears, echoes of battles starting, shadows dancing across the teens and the ground between the two groups. But the two didn’t send out their pokemon. They didn’t even say anything as they left, simply running away past Kaili and the tall man. Away into the hedge maze.
Ultra Genesis Part 30: A festering mindThe sound of breaking branches and crushed bushes retreated into the depths of the darkness. The blade pokemon, Kladenets, returned to its master, wrapping its silken banner around his arm as he gripped its hilt. Mallow skipped eagerly toward him. For the briefest instant, the young man thought himself on some long gone battlefield, being charged by an armoured warrior. But he fought the desire to raise the blade toward her.“Well done! That was one of the fastest fights I’ve ever seen with Totem Lurantis! You’re really-” Mallow was bouncing as she trotted, far more excitable than when he’d arrived at her campsite. The tall, tanned man grabbed her shoulder, pulling her back suddenly and almost off her feet just before Kaili started shouting. It was almost as if the man thought she was about to be attacked.“Congrats” Kaili mocked back at her. “Only three deaths, but at least you got the speed-run record.” There was more venom in his tone than he intended. He could feel his fingers tightening around the hilt of the Honedge as he spoke, but ignored it. Mallows eyes swept from Divey to Bird before settling with a nervous, confused expression on Kaili’s face. “And here I thought you’d be like gym leaders and actually care about the shit that happens in your-”Kiawe tapped Mallow’s shoulder, pointing her to the pieces of Kecleon under a shrub nearby.“You’re right” she hung her head, stepping forward only for the young man to step back away from her. “I’m sorry for your loss Kaili. You did well and they fought well for you. You should be proud.”“And there’s the mock concern. Only showing up when someone calls you on it. At least the big guy knew enough to remain sombre when it happened at his trial.” The green haired lass nodded silently before turning her back on him. Strangely, the desire to swipe at her ebbed the moment she turned away. Not that it was gone, but more that it held itself back. She stopped by the large pot, reaching into a bag beside the fire and drawing out a small green gemstone. It was about the size of the other ones he’d collected and was a dark green only discernible from black by the crackling light of the fire. His fingers tightened around the sword hilt as she approached, he could feel the muscles of his forearm almost begging to move under the silk banner. But he wouldn’t let them. His other hand extended, holding his hand out flat for her to drop the stone into. She attempted to touch his fingers as she placed it into his palm, but the young man almost recoiled, prompting her to just drop it in.“I umm. I won’t do the Z dance.” She mumbled, looking down at the ground as she turned to start packing up the pot and campfire. “Kiawe told me that you’re just not interested in using the Z moves.” The tall man nodded once at Kaili as Mallow spoke, as if verifying her. After dropping the Grass Z crystal with his others, Kaili moved over to pick up Bird and carry him to Divey. Only realising when he reached both of them that Kladenets was still out of his pokeball, Kaili lowered Bird onto the rock and returned the sword to his storage.Gently he scooped up Divey first before trying to gather the bird as well. But no matter how he tried positioning them, one or the other kept falling from his arms, and for the brief moments he could support both. It was too heavy for him to hold properly. He wasn’t going to let himself cry, but he was about to scream in frustration. At the edge, just when the young man couldn’t take it any longer, a hand moved in to gently support the Trumbeak and slide it out of his arms. Kaili looked over as Kiawe cradled the bird’s body silently, nodding once.Without saying anything to him, Kaili turned and left the jungle through the strange hollowed-log walkway. The night outside the ‘jungle’ felt far hotter than he remembered. The cool sea air didn’t seem to help.“Rotom. Please call Deathmachine.” The little pokemon in his pocket didn’t talk back, only chimed once and then again a few seconds later. “Thank you.” He mumbled, lowering himself onto a chair-height rock as he continued to cradle the unmoving Luvdisc. Kiawe continued to simply stand nearby, the Trumbeak cradled in his arms. “I don’t know how I’m going to take both of them.” The young man mumbled again, still staring at the dirt. There was a strange reddish-white flash of light before the area was relit by the crackling light of a fire. Looking up, Kaili found himself almost face to face with a Charizard. The grand lizard raised its head away from his own, rearing itself to full height beside the trial captain. There was a strange saddle harness strapped to its back that he could only see when its tail moved at the right angle to light it against the dark background. There was a sudden almost mechanical screech followed by a heavy thump as the bronze feathered Skarmory landed between the young man and the Charizard.“It’s okay” Kaili finally spoke up again, stepping forward and setting one foot on the base of Deathmachine’s tail feathers. “He’s coming with us, I’m fine.” The bird caw’d once before lowering itself enough for the young man to climb aboard. With Divey pinned between two layers of scales, with only a singlet to cushion it against one, Kaili looked over. The Charizard dropped to all fours to allow Kiawe to climb aboard. He’d expected the other man to simply hand the bird to the dragon to carry. But he continued to cradle it in one arm as he gripped the dragon’s reigns with the other. The flight to the archipelago was incredibly fast. The Charizard, while it didn’t know where they were heading, kept pace with Deathmachine quite easily. Kiawe landed on the beach of the largest island, while Kaili and Deathmachine landed further up onto the grass. As Kaili dismounted, a loud snore nearby was all he needed to know to tell where Mohn was hiding. He placed Divey on the sand before glancing around for a shovel, only to see Kiawe lay Bird beside the luvdisc.A shuffling form caught his attention from the corner of his vision. The little pokemon cosplaying pikachu waddling across the sand toward the group. Kaili dropped to his knees, unable to stop himself wrapping his arms around the little pokemon to hold it close to him. Through closed eyes he saw a brief flash of light. He could feel more than hear, the stomping from behind him. After a few seconds there was a sudden rumbling sound and some force through the ground that almost knocked the young man off balance. Finally breaking the hold, Kaili touched a pokeball on his belt and the little yellow pokemon disappeared in a flash of red light. When he stood and turned around, the young man’s eyes immediately fell on a pair of almost perfectly dug graves nearby. Deathmachine was laying on another island nearby, curled up best it could and clearly already asleep. Kiawe stood beside the graves, framed between the Charizard and a black-skinned Alolan Marowak. With a single nod and a quiet thank you, Kaili picked up Bird and gently lowered him into one of the graves, before doing the same for Divey. It felt strange burying a fish on land. But it also felt like it would be rude to treat it differently than the others. As the young man climbed and out stood staring down, Kiawe finally spoke. “Do you want to say anything for them?”“No more. I’m not letting this happen to any of the others. The best I can do is try to make sure they’re the only ones I need to do this for.”Kiawe nodded, looking down at the marowak when the young man finished. The little pokemon did a strange little dance, stomping about on the ground before the dirt surrounding the pits slid in and packed itself back nicely.“You head back first.” Kiawe said, tapping his black and gold pokeball and making the marowak vanish in a flash of red light. “Let your Skarmory sleep, Charizard will come back for me. Head for the ruins of life back near the city. That’s where the Grand Trials are held.”“Thank you.” Kaili mumbled, climbing aboard the Charizard and letting it sweep him away into the night. The Charizard almost crashed to landing on the street of Heahea City. It didn’t hurt, or damage the ground, but it was a far heavier landing than he was use to at this point. The moment he’d managed to peel himself off the creature’s back and onto the solid ground, it had launched itself upward again and was off toward the sea.The young man stretched his legs sideways, trying to unfasten his pants from some poorly positioned scales without causing himself any serious damage. After a few minutes he was finally ready to actually attend to his situation. First step was to find exactly where these ruins of life were. Walking with more speed than he’d intended to, the young man accidentally rushed to the window of the tourist centre.Just through the window was a map of the island. Through a cave to his right, ‘Diglett’s Cave’, was a stretch of land he’d seen from the air several times at this point. One end was labelled ‘Konikoni city’, the other ‘Memorial Hill’ and ‘Ruins of Life’.Nodding to himself, Kaili headed across and slightly up the road to the bridge to ‘Diglett’s Cave’. The bridge was lined up perfectly with the entrance, allowing the young man to see how dark it truly was inside far before he actually grew near. A sign hung outside the cave;+================+|| DIGLETT’S CAVE |||| Through to Konikoni ||+================+The cave was far roomier than he’d expected from the name. Inside seemed more reminiscent of the remains of an industrial mine than a cave. There were mounds of loose dirt beside pits of unfathomable depth. But also wheelbarrows and shovels scattered about the area. A giant pile of loose earth rose in the centre of this main chamber, making it impossible to properly see the other side.Pulling the phone from his pocket, Kaili held it just in front of him. “Torch please.” There wasn’t even a beep response as the flashlight turned on. The memory of mocking Kukui with the idea of ‘superior technology’ flitted through his mind as he proceeded inward. He could hear movement above him as he walked through the dark mine. A shuffling and occasional fluttering. A suspicion crossed his mind, that things would go poorly for him if he pointed the flashlight any higher than he was. From the edges of his light he could see small creatures moving amid the dirt and apparently tilling the solid stone. Strange molelike creatures. He’d seen pictures of Diglett before, but these appeared to have some kind of strange disease, something stringy and pus yellow was growing from their heads. He couldn’t help but feel just a little sorry for them. And then he saw something that really did capture his attention. It was about the height of his waist and seemingly covered in a green stone armour. Though much of that height was a single spike-like fin rising from the top of its head. It had its back to him, apparently oblivious to the young man’s very loud approach.Kaili had never actually seen one of these, but he knew what it was all the same. Trying his best to remain as quiet as possible, he lowered his bag to the ground and unzipped it. To check it hadn’t run away, he lifted the light to the larvitar again. But it hadn’t seemed to move at all. As he pulled a pokeball from the bag, he quickly moved the phone from side to side, letting it light up the pokemon from multiple angles. Not only did the larvitar not move, but there was a strangely placed flat rock near in front of it. The rock seemed to curve underneath as if it was sitting on the ground, but still had something akin to a shadow beneath it even when that shadow should be lit directly.Turning the pokeball in his hand so as to make it easy to jab something, Kaili crouched as best as he could and slowly crabwalked toward the Larvitar. His hand holding the phone far above his head but still pointing at the pokemon. As he passed the rock, he kept his attention focused on it.Almost on cue, the rock flicked aside and something leapt out at his ankle. He didn’t even have a chance to see what it was before the pokeball made contact and it vanished in red light. The ball buzzed in his hand, he could feel it fighting to get out.“You lost, deal with it.” The young man turned it in his hand so to block the beam from letting the pokemon out. After several minutes, everything suddenly changed. He was standing in the Lush Jungle, hand in the grass. He was beside a yellow camper van in the middle of nowhere, taking the pokeball from a stranger in a weird vest. He was on his knees, left hand around someone’s throat while bashing their face in with the pokeball. For a second, he forced himself to focus on this scene, forcing the others from his mind as his eyes seemed to drift upward. Beside him was a strange man in a business suit, grinning down at him as Kaili’s fist drove forward like reality was running in slow motion.Suddenly he was back crouched in the cave, his fist thrusting forward with the force of this imaginary punch and knocking him to the ground with an ungodly clattering.Groaning in slight pain, Kaili lifted the pokeball to see the little keypad requesting a nickname.‘Sneak’The ball chimed once the phrase was entered and the keypad folded away. Not even sure what he’d just caught, Kaili hooked the pokeball onto his belt with the others before pushing himself, painfully, to his feet.“-block people?” a distant echo reached his ears. The sounds to follow a strange mass of muffled noises. Picking up his phone, Kaili brushed his pants a little before continuing along the winding path through the cave toward the sounds. The closer he drew, the clearer it was that he was about to stumble on some argument. The first voice to become clear enough to make out, was also the first person he saw. A youth a little younger than himself standing in the light of the far entrance to the cave. He wore yellow pants and sported an orange bag, but Kaili had never heard Hau so riled up.The boy smiled when he saw Kaili, puffing his chest out and looking back at a pair of other people Kaili could only now make out. Two youths in black and white clothes, white skull caps and bandanna’s over their faces. There was a strange righteousness in Hau’s posture, that mixed with everything else tonight… did not sit well with the young man.“Kaili, finally, these punks are layin around ready to rob defenseless old ladies that come through. They’re just waiting to mug someone.” Hau stepped back closer to Kaili. There was a strange sensation of his hackles rising, though there was no hair on the back of Kaili’s neck anymore.“What are you talking about” He growled, Looking from the excited youth to the two skull teens loitering near the cave entrance. “Actually I don’t care.” The young man found himself turning to face Hau more fully, stretching his back as he did. “What are you doing in their face? Anyone who comes through a cave should be able to handle themselves. Right? Or are you about to tell me that a ‘defenseless old lady’ would be more than willing to walk under a swarm of Zubats? Or past pokemon that spring from little holes in the ground?”He let his self control fall away, all the anger from the whole night suddenly unleashed as he advanced on Hau. The younger boy stepped back, recoiling a little as Kaili’s fist clenched.“You just assumed didn’t you? That kids wearing black to stay warm in the night were out here to pick fights? Didn’t think they might just like hangin round here? How ‘bout that they wanna warn people it’s dangerous inside?” Several images flashing through the young man’s mind, almost as if they were reflected in Hau’s eyes as he started to recoil from him even more.“Yo chill bro” A voice came from behind him. “Yeah leave ‘em be, K. Punk’s just an idiot yo.”Kaili looked over his shoulder, only now realising there was a hand on his upper arm. It looked like the boy was trying to pull him back, but Kaili couldn’t feel any resistance. He looked from Liam to Hau and back. The young man’s hand relaxed, his arm swinging back to his side as he stepped away from Hau.“Sorry.” He looked at Hau, forcing himself to pull it together as the skull teens stepped back, visibly calmer themselves. “Sorry man, had that building for… for a while I guess, didn’t mean to take it out at you.”
